According to a Cisco Visual Networking Index white paper, mobile data traffic increased by a massive 81% in 2013. Smartphones represented only 27% of total global handsets in use in 2013.

Apple’s iPad tablet was released on 3rd April 2010. Their sales growth for this product has been stronger than any other product they’ve released so far and shows no sign of slowing down. Globally there are currently nearly 2 billion smartphone users and 5 billion total mobile subscribers.

Mobile Platforms

A constantly increasing diversity of smartphones exist in the market with 1000’s of different specifications in screen-size, operating system and functionality. By the end of 2013, iOS consumption surpassed Android, which is quite suprising given the lack of innovation from Apple in recent times.

The white paper predicts that mobile data traffic will increase 11-fold between 2013 and 2018. It's safe to say that making websites compatible with mobile devices has never been more important. How customers perceive businesses online is becoming increasingly integral to how businesses perform. It's going to be interesting to see how 2014 pans out in this area.
